Fiber Optic Components for Connector Assembly and Termination
A reliable fiber connection depends on components that match the connector family, fiber configuration, cable dimensions and termination process. Precision Fiber Products offers fiber optic connectors and related interconnect parts for professional cable assembly, production, laboratory, network installation and repair applications.
The collection includes complete connectors, ceramic and stainless steel ferrules, ferrule assemblies, fiber optic adapters, connector boots, dust caps, eyelets, clips and other assembly hardware. Available configurations vary by connector family and product.
Each component performs a specific function within the connection. Ferrules position the optical fiber at the connector interface, adapters mate compatible connectorized fibers, boots provide support where the cable enters the connector, and dust caps help protect exposed connector and ferrule surfaces when they are not in use.
Before ordering, verify the connector type, fiber mode, ferrule dimensions, cable size, polish and material required by the assembly. Components that appear physically similar may not be dimensionally or optically interchangeable.
Fiber Optic Connector Types and Components
Fiber optic connector types differ in size, coupling mechanism, ferrule format and intended application. PFP currently lists products for LC, SC, FC, ST, SMA and MU connector families, including selected singlemode, multimode, polarization-maintaining and high-power configurations.
Choosing a connector should begin with the interface required by the equipment or existing assembly. The fiber type, connector polish, ferrule material and cable construction must also match the intended application.
LC Fiber Connectors
An LC fiber connector uses a compact connector body and a 1.25 mm ferrule format. Its smaller size makes LC connections useful where multiple fiber connections must fit within limited equipment or panel space.
The current PFP collection includes selected LC simplex and duplex connectors, singlemode and multimode configurations, LC/APC and LC/UPC products, and multimode connectors for OM3 and OM4 applications. Product specifications vary, so verify fiber size, polish and cable compatibility before ordering.
LC connector components available in the collection also include ferrules, ferrule assemblies, boots, duplex clips, dust caps and selected LC adapters.
SC Fiber Connectors
An SC fiber connector uses a push-pull coupling design and a 2.5 mm ferrule format. SC connectors are used in telecom, broadband, data communication, test and equipment-interconnection applications.
PFP offers selected SC singlemode, multimode, APC, polarization-maintaining and fast connector configurations. The collection also contains SC ferrules, ferrule assemblies, connector clips and related accessories.
When selecting an SC product, confirm whether the interface requires PC, UPC or APC polish. APC and UPC connector interfaces should not be treated as interchangeable.
FC Fiber Connectorss
An FC fiber connector uses a threaded coupling mechanism commonly found in test equipment, laboratories, industrial systems and precision fiber applications. The threaded connection can help maintain a secure mechanical interface in equipment and production environments.
Available PFP products include selected FC singlemode, multimode, FC/APC, FC/UPC, polarization-maintaining, mini FC and high-power connector configurations. Ceramic zirconia and stainless steel ferrule options are available for selected products.
Verify the key orientation, ferrule dimensions, fiber diameter, polish and connector configuration required by the application before ordering.
ST Fiber Connectors
An ST fiber connector uses a bayonet-style coupling mechanism and a 2.5 mm ferrule format. ST connectors remain in use in selected multimode, industrial, instrumentation and legacy fiber systems.
PFP lists selected ST singlemode and multimode connectors with ceramic zirconia, stainless steel and stainless-alloy ferrule configurations. Confirm the fiber dimensions, cable construction and required connector materials using the individual product specifications.
SMA, MU, PM and High-Power Fiber Connectors
SMA fiber connectors are used in selected industrial, medical, illumination, laser-delivery and large-core fiber applications. The PFP collection includes selected SMA connectors, bare fiber adapters and ceramic or stainless steel ferrules in multiple dimensions.
MU connectors use a compact 1.25 mm ferrule format. PFP lists selected MU singlemode connectors and ceramic ferrule assemblies.
Polarization-maintaining connectors require control of fiber orientation as well as dimensional compatibility. High-power fiber connectors may use specialized ferrule materials, dimensions and assembly designs. Do not select a PM or high-power product based only on the exterior connector family; review the full specifications for the individual component.
Fiber Optic Ferrules, Adapters and Connector Parts
Complete connectors are only one part of a fiber optic interconnect. Connector assembly and repair may also require ferrules, adapters, boots, dust caps, eyelets, clips and other hardware selected for the exact cable and termination process.
Ceramic Zirconia and Stainless Steel Fiber Optic Ferrules
Fiber optic ferrules hold and position the optical fiber at the connector interface. The correct ferrule must match the connector family, outside diameter, fiber or bore dimensions, material and end-face requirements.
PFP offers selected ceramic zirconia, stainless steel and stainless-alloy ferrules and ferrule assemblies. Current products include 1.25 mm formats for selected LC and MU applications, 2.5 mm formats for selected SC, ST and FC applications, and 3.17 mm formats for selected SMA applications.
Ceramic and metal ferrules should not be selected solely by connector name. Verify the exact outside diameter, inside diameter, tip geometry, material, fiber type and connector assembly requirements.
Fiber Optic Adapters
Fiber optic adapters provide an interface for connecting compatible connectorized fibers or, in the case of a bare fiber adapter, temporarily positioning an unconnectorized fiber for testing or equipment access.
The PFP collection includes selected LC duplex adapters and bare fiber adapters in multimode and SMA-style configurations. Confirm the connector family, simplex or duplex format, fiber configuration, mounting arrangement and alignment requirements before ordering.
Do not assume that two adapters are compatible simply because they accept connectors with a similar exterior shape. The alignment interface and fiber configuration must match the application.
Connector Boots, Dust Caps, Eyelets and Clips
Connector boots support the cable where it enters the connector and can help control bending and strain at the termination point. Choose the boot according to the connector body, cable or buffer diameter, required length and exit angle.
Fiber optic dust caps protect exposed ferrules, connector interfaces and adapters while they are disconnected. A dust cap does not replace proper fiber optic cleaning and inspection before mating.
Eyelets and crimp hardware secure cable strength members or other connector components during assembly. Simplex-to-duplex clips and related connector hardware must match the connector housing and assembly design.
How to Select Fiber Optic Interconnect Components
Consider the complete assembly rather than choosing a part from its appearance alone.
-
Connector family: Identify whether the assembly requires an LC, SC, FC, ST, SMA, MU or another connector interface.
-
Fiber configuration: Confirm whether the system uses singlemode, multimode or polarization-maintaining fiber.
-
Connector polish: Determine whether the installed interface requires PC, UPC or APC. Do not mate APC and UPC connector formats as though they were equivalent.
-
Ferrule dimensions: Verify the ferrule outside diameter, bore or fiber size, tip geometry and dimensional requirements.
-
Ferrule material: Choose ceramic zirconia, stainless steel or another specified material according to the connector design and application.
-
Cable dimensions: Match boots, eyelets and crimp components to the cable jacket, buffer and strength-member construction.
-
Application requirements: Laboratory, telecom, broadband, field repair, production and high-power applications may require different materials and connector designs.
-
Product compatibility: Confirm that connector bodies, ferrules, boots, clips, eyelets and related parts are designed to work together.
Follow the connector, fiber and equipment manufacturer’s specifications whenever they are available. For specialized or custom assemblies, provide PFP with the connector family, fiber dimensions, cable construction, polish and application requirements.

Fiber Optic Connectors and Components FAQ
Fiber optic interconnect components are the parts used to terminate, connect, align, protect and support optical fibers. Depending on the assembly, these may include connectors, ferrules, adapters, boots, dust caps, eyelets, clips and other connector hardware.
The current PFP collection includes selected LC, SC, FC, ST, SMA and MU connector products. Available configurations include singlemode, multimode, polarization-maintaining and high-power products. Availability, polish, ferrule material and supported fiber dimensions vary by product.
Singlemode and multimode connectors may use similar connector bodies but are designed for different fiber systems and dimensional requirements. Match the connector and ferrule to the fiber mode, fiber dimensions, polish and equipment interface specified for the assembly.
Start with the connector family and required ferrule outside diameter. Then verify the bore or fiber size, ferrule material, tip geometry, fiber configuration and end-face requirements. Do not choose a ferrule based only on whether it is labeled LC, SC, FC, ST or SMA.
A fiber optic connector terminates the end of a fiber or cable. A fiber optic adapter provides the interface that aligns and mates compatible connectorized fibers. Bare fiber adapters perform a different function by temporarily holding unconnectorized fiber for testing or equipment access.
A connector boot supports the cable where it enters the connector and can help control bending and strain. A dust cap protects exposed connector, ferrule or adapter surfaces while disconnected. Connector end faces should still be inspected and cleaned before mating.
