New Fiber Optic Network for Alaskan Villages

According to Naomi Klouda of the Homer Tribune, for the first time ever, fiber optic cables connect Bristol Bay with high speed internet.

Recently, crews excavated a small area of Bishop Beach in order to lay the base for a fiber optic cable broadband link that is going to connect 65 Alaskan villages in the western region.

This project, the TERRA-SW, is supported with a $44 million grant from the USDA Rural Utilities Service and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, as well as a $44 million loan to United Utilities Inc.

The first step to this project was that a “bore” endpoint was buried below the Elks Lodge at Bishop’s Beach and into the tide line. As was brought out by Krag Johnsen, director of rural broadband for GCI.

“The next step is from a ship out in Cook Inlet. From Homer to Williams Port that last week in June and first week of July, they will begin to lay cable off the back of a ship,” Johnsen said. “The cable will lay on the bottom of the bay. It’s a heavy armored fiber optic cable that works its way into silt and mud and gets down embedded in the inlet.”

Each of these 65 villages, who are now depending on Satellite, will benefit from this soon to be available fiber optics; villages include those around Lake Iliamna. It will extend terrestrial broadband services to more than 9,000 homes.

The TERRA-SW project is a colossal undertaking that entails running nine fiber segments, totaling 290 miles of submarine and land-based cable. There will be seven cable landing stations and 14 new microwave towers.

“We’re hoping to be finished with the major construction by the end of the summer, then complete the network pieces toward the end of the year,” he said.

Pros of Fiber Optics Explored by Consumer Reports

An article from the ABC7 News of San Francisco documented that Consumer reports put out a survey resulting in the conclusion that fiber optics have a lot to offer.

A bay area residence, Shalini Bhargava; along with many others, has been getting up to speed on the new all-fiber network recently installed in her home. All of her Telecom services, such as television, internet, and phone will be delivered through this all-fiber network.

This ABC7 article quoted Ms. Bhargava commenting, “I feel good then, if that is the new technology and that is where things are moving. It feels good.”

In another survey given to about 70,000 readers by the Consumer Reports National Research Center, a lot of the highest levels of satisfaction were documented by those who got their telecom services from either Verizon Fios or AT&T U-Verse, the phone company services that are using fiber optics.

“Both companies scored equally high in satisfaction, but Verizon Fios outscored AT&T U-Verse on performance factors like internet speed, call quality and reliability across all three services,” said Consumer Report’s Roselind Tordesillas.

The most likely reason for customers having more satisfaction with Verizon Fios is because of the fact that their fiber cables are ran directly into the house. Whereas AT&T U-Verse installs their fiber-optic lines up to a neighborhood station and then uses copper cabling the remainder of the way.

“If you don’t have fiber all the way to the home, it’s like funneling traffic from an interstate highway to a local road. Speed and capacity can suffer,” Tordesillas explains.

As a result of these surveys, it’s clear that we can conclude that using fiber-optic lines for your Telecom services surpasses any other service such as is provided through cable companies or satellite providers.
