As reported by The Daily Star’s Mohamad El Amin, Lebanon is anticipated to reveal a new submarine telecommunications optical cable.

This cable has been designated “EUROPA”, aimed at greatly increasing international capacity, hindering Internet breakdown and drastically advancing the country’s impending fiber-optics network.

“We expect to iron out the final details of project within six months. The project [hopefully] will be finalized in 30 months from now,” Firas Abi-Nassif, adviser to the telecoms minister, told The Daily Star.

The new cable system is calculated to be finished in two years, falling at the perfect time for an expected increase in demand on telecommunications. This increase in demand is due to the completion of the first phase of the fiber-optical network.

Along with reinforcing the country’s overall telecommunications efficiency, it aims to supply a secure backup to the CADMOS and IMEWE cable systems used now.

“The CADMOS cable to Cyprus has been built since 1997. The average age of these cables is around 20 years, so we had to start thinking about alternatives,” Abi-Nassif explained. “IMEWE, as we saw last week, is prone to breakdowns. The new cable will avoid such situations in a very transparent and efficient manner.”

The cable intends to promote all telecommunications channels. It will feature both data and voice telecommunications abilities. This permits boosting Internet and telephone networks, Abi-Nassif added.

According to Naomi Klouda of the Homer Tribune, for the first time ever, fiber optic cables connect Bristol Bay with high speed internet.

Recently, crews excavated a small area of Bishop Beach in order to lay the base for a fiber optic cable broadband link that is going to connect 65 Alaskan villages in the western region.

This project, the TERRA-SW, is supported with a $44 million grant from the USDA Rural Utilities Service and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, as well as a $44 million loan to United Utilities Inc.

The first step to this project was that a “bore” endpoint was buried below the Elks Lodge at Bishop’s Beach and into the tide line. As was brought out by Krag Johnsen, director of rural broadband for GCI.

“The next step is from a ship out in Cook Inlet. From Homer to Williams Port that last week in June and first week of July, they will begin to lay cable off the back of a ship,” Johnsen said. “The cable will lay on the bottom of the bay. It’s a heavy armored fiber optic cable that works its way into silt and mud and gets down embedded in the inlet.”

Each of these 65 villages, who are now depending on Satellite, will benefit from this soon to be available fiber optics; villages include those around Lake Iliamna. It will extend terrestrial broadband services to more than 9,000 homes.

The TERRA-SW project is a colossal undertaking that entails running nine fiber segments, totaling 290 miles of submarine and land-based cable. There will be seven cable landing stations and 14 new microwave towers.

“We’re hoping to be finished with the major construction by the end of the summer, then complete the network pieces toward the end of the year,” he said.

The censorship in China is being broadened to cell phone text messages. Clifford Coonan of Variety observes that the telecom operators of China will cut off any SMS messages that do not meet the severe requirements of the country’s net ‘nannies’.

“China’s three major telecom operators, China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom, will block text messages that contain “vulgar or indecent” text messages. China has 750 million cellphone subscribers.” states Mr. Coonan.

This surveillance of SMS messages is part of a deeper operation that is pointed toward restricting the access of the Internet.

“Facebook, YouTube and other popular websites are banned in China because of their potentially seditious content, and the government has made it illegal to set up personal websites without registering domain names with a state agency first.” declares Clifford Coonan. He also made the note, ”The text message content will be screened to see if it contains any of the 13 proscribed terms listed by nine government departments, including the description of sexual acts or human sexual organs, or any type of sexual innuendo.”

Many of China’s mobile phone users are worried that their privacy will be violated by these new guidelines. The parental control we see here in the United States seems to be extended to a more severe state of an enormous government control in China.
